I’m a huge fan of making the most of our great outdoors – we’re lucky to live in a beautiful island surrounded by lush countryside and of course the sea. We literally have a playground for all sorts of outdoor activities on our doorstep!
It’s the perfect time of year to encourage your whole family to get active. Psychologically exercising outdoors is great for our minds; helping us de-stress while at the same time boosting our energy levels. The other huge benefit is the exposure to vitamin D which is essential to healthy bones (though don’t forget to wear your sunscreen).
However all of this outdoor activity shouldn’t take the place of what I consider the most important training of all. Strength training.
So why is strength training so important? Not only do stronger muscles mean that you’ll be able to carry out your activities of daily living, but in short, strength training improves your quality of life: You’ll burn more calories; the risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures will decrease; the risk of developing diabetes will decrease and you’ll be mentally stronger.
Resistance training also improves our self esteem through the sense of accomplishment we get when we complete a hard training session or see how we’ve improved over time. Keep strong this summer!
